Entrancing experience

Sky City will fall, the readers already know that. What they don't know is the how, and SM Blooding is a twisted writer. Sky City is where the Hands of Tarot live. Mighty families who believe themselves all-powerful and have no problems killing innocent people. Nix, the Queen of Wands, is the cruellest of the lot.

When Nix kills the leader of El'Asim (one of the three remaining Great Families) and captures his son, she thinks she's hit the jackpot. But Synn, broken or not, bonded or not, will not stay with her. He escapes with Keeley, Joshua and Yvette, to return to his people (the El'Asim) and his mother's people (the Ino).

'Fall of Sky City' is the first instalment of the Devices of War trilogy, at the steampunk crossover of fantasy and science-fiction. SM Blooding created a remarkable world where some cities, no matter how big, are housed by Letharan (gigantic jellyfishes) and can hide beneath the ocean; ships can sail the clouds (the El'Asim's technology is more ecological than the ones used by the Hands of Tarot).

Our young heroes are Synn (El'Asim Family), Hadji (Umira Family), Yvette (Leblanc Family) and siblings Keeley and Joshua (Barhain Family). They each bear the Mark of their respective Families: control over an element. While reading the action-packed adventures of these well-developed characters, one can easily see them in their mind's eye and feel for them and with them when they face deadly dangers. They feel real.

Reading 'Fall of Sky City' is an amazing and entrancing experience. SM Blooding leaves the readers on a monumental cliffhanger. I can't wait to get hold of the sequel, 'Knight of Wands', as the last page left me with a compulsive need to find out what happens next.....
