Being from the South and growing up hearing ghost stories from my family and others in the area this book fits in with many of those. These remind of the era and it is refreshing to see that this is somewhat being carryed on or passed down so to say.
The illustrations are very fitting and are a wonderful addition to the book and really bring the emotion into the stories.
"Southern Haunts" isn't your typical ghost story book. Instead it's a collaboration of writers who were brought together with one simple plan: write a ghost story that has some basic factual position (ie location, truth behind the legend, self experienced paranormal experience).
What happens is a culmination of some of the most spine tingling terror you will feel. And the fact that these tales are based lightly (at the very least) in fact makes them that much horrific.
I was completely enamored from beginning to end and often times kept telling myself, "put it down after this chapter." only to continue reading long into the night.
I believe I finished it in less than four days. I simply couldn't quit reading. In many anthologies you will find one or two duds but not here: Mr Brown worked devilishly (see what I did there?) hard to find the best of the best.
I won't spoil any of the tales, but certainly don't miss the tale of the Lalaurie mansion by Ms. Kalila Smith. Highly recommend to anyone who wants a little fright in there night.
