Leslie Rayborn's Review

I had a bit of a hard time getting started on this book. I knew that this was a possibility going into it, however, because fantasy is not my first pick of genres. I wanted to give it a try though, and after getting to know the characters a bit and slugging through the seemingly endless words that I could hardly pronounce that helped to create this mystical other world, I was finally able to settle in and enjoy the story.

This book packs quite the magical punch! As a reader, we get to grow up with Eolyn, from her troubled childhood through her long journey of becoming a maga. In her world, women were burned at the stake for suspicion of being a witch. Unlike the real-life history of Salem, however, the men in her world are free to practice magic to the highest degree. (What a bunch of jerks!) "Hey you, there, strange person in a dress. Go cook me a feast while I conjure up spells and such."

Clearly, this is not how the author wrote. It's just my take on the gender attitudes expressed throughout regarding women and their "place".

I enjoyed Eolyn and her story. She had more courage than I could ever imagine to have myself. I'd just be happy to be able to do some simple magic and make the meals I cook better!
